Behind the ‘Mallard Ball’ — and the very special birthday girl it honored

Here at Over Under, we know we’ve got plenty of reasons to count our blessings. And one of the most important ones is “the leading lady of Over Under” — founder Bryan Horn’s wife of 14 years, Haley Horn.

Over Under simply wouldn’t be here without Haley, and we couldn’t be more thankful to have her standing behind us in all that we do. And that’s one of the reasons that, when she turned 40 on February 14, 1983 (Valentine’s Day baby), we pulled out all the stops to celebrate the occasion. To make her big day more special, we threw a bash we called the “Mallard Ball” — and it’s safe to say that a whole lot of fun was had by all.

About the celebration

The party’s theme — the Mallard Ball — was a throwback to Haley’s college days at Auburn University. (War Eagle, by the way!) One of the biggest celebrations presented by her sorority there, Alpha Delta Pi, saw all of its attendees dress in camo. And of course, here at Over Under, that’s one of our specialties — so we ran with it.

Held at the Friday Musicale in Jacksonville, Florida, our affair saw more than 90 people gather to celebrate Haley and her birthday. All guests were given a camo wristband at the door, and the good times started rolling from there. The catered menu included Southern favorites like BBQ pulled pork sliders and lobster mac and cheese. A local-favorite Jacksonville band took the stage and played everything from Motown classics to .38 Special to Robert Earl Keen to AC/DC — and you better believe the place shook all night long.

No detail was overlooked for this event, from the camouflage monogram cookies and cake to multiple mallard duck mounts throughout the venue. Haley’s close friends and family members even made custom banners and balloon arches to help Haley celebrate her big day.

Over Under at the event

Of course, Haley wore her Over Under Wingmaster Duck Camo Field Jacket — a fitting call for a mallard-themed event. And she rounded out her outfit with her Dubarry boots and a custom Over Under hat (which, along with a custom Over Under T-shirt made just for this event, was also included as part of a goodie bag given to each guest in attendance).

The party was a huge hit, and we all made memories that are sure to last a lifetime. More than anything, we all hope that the birthday girl and guest of honor had a blast — and that Haley appreciated all the efforts that went into the event (maybe even a small fraction as much as we appreciate her).

Happy 40th birthday, Haley — here at Over Under, we all know that we couldn’t do what we do without you!
